I’ve heard variations of this phrase countless times in my 17 years in the industry. Users go through the motions, not realizing their processes consist of workarounds on top of workarounds. All too often, band-aid fixes are applied that temporarily work as long as nothing in the industry changes.

The problem with this approach is it masks the larger underlying symptom, and when the industry changes, as it regularly does, the band-aid can’t stop the bleeding. I’ve worked in departments that have completely fallen apart due to unexpected volume increases that proved their inefficient processes couldn’t handle the change in volume.

Prior to my time at Quavo, I managed teams that onboarded to newer platforms. While we were promised automation that would alleviate capacity constraints, we quickly identified that processes were built to mirror the existing steps from the previous platform. The developing team built us a beautiful product that offered no reprieve and on a platform that made it harder to eliminate redundant steps that “have always been done that way.”
